THE CHANCAY

THE CHANCAY

The Chancay culture arose after the Wari culture. Developed between the valleys of Chancay, Chillon, Rimac and Lurin on The Central Coast of Peru, between the years 1200 and 1470 a.d., where they were conquered by the Incas.

The ceramics found of this pre-columbian village come from extensive cemeteries. The classical style of the pottery is rough contexture and decorated in black or brown on a cream or white background. Therefore it is known as The Black on White style.

The ceramic production of this culture was mass character and large-scale. Among its most recognized ceramics are the so-called Cuchimilcos and potbellies.
